Letter : Independence (Mo.), to Messrs. Sebille and Adams, Fort Platte, Missouri Territory, 1842 Sep 14.

ALS to Sebille and Adams at a trading post near Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Leonard asks that W. D. Hodgkiss, who is about to leave for the mountains with James McCloskey, be given assistance in conducting his business. He also asks that Sebille and Adams deduct money owed him from the wages due Aaron Sharp, and that they reserve for him "a painted robe of the first quality and a large bear skin."

A native of Md. who was commissioned captain & Q.M.G. in U.S. Army, June 24, 1812 and honorably discharged June 15, 1815. September 11, 1815, he married Suzanne, daughter of Gabriel Godfroy. From that year on, he held many offices of public trust. In 1817 was Superintendent of Buildings for University of Michigan; in August, 1818, Q.M.G. of territory, in 1819-1820 elected to Detroit Board of Trustees and in 1821 was defeated by Solomon Sibley in election for delegate to Congress, and in 1823...

Born in Pennsylvania in 1809, Leonard became a fur trader, a clerk for Captain Benjamin Bonneville, and a member of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California. In 1836 he established a store near Independence, Missouri, and operated a boat between St. Louis and western Missouri carrying merchandise up-river and furs and other Indian trade products down to St. Louis.
